BIOGRAPHY

Alistair Stuart MacLean, writer, was born in Glaskow, Scotland. He spent his childhood in the Scottish Highlands until his father died when he was fourteen. He joined the Royal Navy in 1941 and served as a torpedo man. During World War II he was captured by the Japanese and tortured. Following the war he was educated at Glaskow University. He was a teacher until 1955 when he became a full-time writer.

MacLean published his first book, H.M.S. ULYSSES, when he was 33. The book became a bestseller. He is well-known for his novel GUNS OF NAVARONE which was made into a film. He published two novels under the pseudonym Ian Stuart.

Alistair MacLean died in Munich, Germany in 1972.
