Eyvind Johnson, co-recipient of the 1974 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Saltsjobaden, Sweden. He was one of six children born to Olof Petter Johnson and Cevia Gustafsdotter. His father was a stonecutter. Living on his own from the age of 13, he worked a number of odd jobs including sawmill worker and lumberjack. He later wrote for Swedish papers in Paris and cofounded the literary magazine VAR NUTID.

Johnson is the author of more than 40 novels and short-story collections. He published his first collection of short stories when he was 24 entitled DE LYRA FRAMLINGARNA (THE FOUR STRANGERS). His four-volume epic, ROMANEN OM OLOF, became a classic of Swedish literature.

Eyvind Johnson died in Stockholm, Sweden in 1976.
